Early in the musical, Cece’s frustration with losing her independence boils over.  She’s fed up with being told what she can and can’t do by her daughter, Jane.

Forgetting that her licence has been taken away from her, she announces she’s going out - to buy cake that she asked Jane to buy.

When Jane reminds her, in front of her friends, that she’s not meant to be driving anymore, she snaps.

“The law is an ass -  YOU are an ass!”  

She tells her daughter that she doesn’t have long left, that she and her friends are in the fast lane to dying and “it’s okay for those in the slow lanes”.  She says that if she wants cake, she will have it.

In this song, Cece has fun.  She teases her daughter and references Portugal’s variation on the Bible’s story about pearls and swine.  ‘Don’t feed the donkey sponge cake’ – meaning don’t waste good things on those who don’t appreciate them.
